Started by A Bike Messenger in 1999
NYC bike messenger Antonio “Tone” Rodrigues turned the alleycat — the unsanctioned checkpoint race messengers ran between deliveries — into something bigger: a race where every checkpoint was a grocery store, and the finish line was filling food bank shelves.
Today Cranksgiving is grassroots-organized in over 100 cities, entirely volunteer-run, and entirely pedal-powered. No entry fee goes anywhere but the food.
